This is America
It’s hard to think about what life was like without a smartphone. Let me rephrase - it’s hard to think there was a time when we didn’t have phones that were fully capable of managing our entire lives. Reminders, notifications, social media, photography, email - OMG, literally, our phones handle everything. And look, I get it, technology and innovation is what led us here, but imagine if in 2019, suddenly, no one had a smartphone?
How would we get by every day?
Would it be hard?
Would it feel like something is missing?
What would our social interactions be like?
Would we talk to each other more?
Would we express our emotions more?
Clearly there’s a lot to think about in this highly unlikely hypothetical situation, but I do hope there is a time coming where we (as a people) don’t rely on our smartphones as much as we do now. Of course, not everyone is glued to their phones, but a lot of us are. I am sometimes! Specifically with social media, we spend all of this time looking, consuming, and judging, instead of… well, whatever it is we used to be doing before smartphones were a thing. So, this may be very easy for some, but I pledge for us to start by spending one whole day without your phone and let’s see what magic we can create!
